“How can I really learn how to actually train, just by looking at videos?” – Nate C.
We still get this question a lot, and it’s because there are holdouts in the martial arts who simply refuse to believe you can learn from a video.
I don’t know, maybe they’re threatened by technology, maybe they’re frustrated instructors who refuse to move into the 1980’s. Fact is, we’ve been learning and training from from video and books ever since the dead sea scrolls.
If you don’t think you can follow detailed, step-by-step instructions – pause – stop – reverse as much as you wish…I don’t know what to tell you.
There isn’t a sport or activity I do that I don’t use video. From football to weight lifting, video is an integral part of the training process.
So, it’s obvious you can learn from a video…but I know that really wasn’t your question…
Your question is really, CAN I DEVELOP SELF DEFENSE SKILL from watching a video?
The answer is YES, but just only watching will limit you to tactics and awareness.
In order to develop PHYSICAL SKILL you need to do PHYSICAL WORK.
People get confused sometimes because we have video based training. They think I’m telling you that all you need to do is watch and you’ll be able to defend yourself.
But SDTS members know that’s not true.
PHYSICAL SKILL only comes from PHYSICAL PRACTICE.
And it doesn’t matter if it’s me, in person standing in front of you telling you what to do or a video on your phone telling you.
There’s no doubt there are somethings video can’t replace.
Video can’t replace the interpersonal relationships and socialization that come from working out with others. The memories and bonds formed during training can last a lifetime.
Video also won’t make you feel guilty for missing class or make you do push ups for being late.
Video won’t make you enter tournaments or take promotion exams. And it certainly won’t get upset if you ask it to show a technique OVER and OVER again.
Video will never be closed.
Video won’t forget where you left off in your training.
No need to have to wait until the teacher shows that technique again. Even if you haven’t trained in years, video will enable you to pick up where you left off.
Video will let you go at your own pace.
If you’re a slow or fast learner, beginner or advanced – going to class is going to be frustrating at times. You can’t teach one lesson that is going to be perfect for everyone.
Unless you’re paying for private lessons, you’re going to be forced to learn whatever it is they’re teaching.
You never have to remember with video.
Problem with going to class is that you need to take notes or video the lessons. Without any documentation, it’s going to be difficult to recall everything. Recall is a function of frequency over time.
According to this University of Southern Florida Study the longer in between learning sessions the more difficult it is to recall them over time. For example – suppose you learn SELF DEFENSE A and then you don’t practice SELF DEFENSE A again for several weeks. Chances are you will need to relearn that technique all over again.
Video enables you to go over it until it becomes instinctive and convulsive.
You can’t ask a video questions.
This is true. The main advantage to live instruction is instant feedback. If you have a question you can ask. If the instructor see’s you’re doing it wrong he can correct you.
That’s why we just don’t “sell videos”.

DVDs don’t talk back…but the SDTS does.
To be honest, if you’re in an hour class with 10 other people, there’s only so much of the Instructor’s time to go around.
You’re lucky if you get a minute or two of the instructor’s attention…or if there’s another person in class who doesn’t shut up and monopolizes their time….you get ZERO attention.
The SDTS is always open.
Unlike class, you don’t need to leave work early or miss out on a family function for your video. As adults, you have limited time to do this and live training is a temporary solution. Eventually life gets in the way and you will miss class.
Unlike sports and martial arts, self defense is a life skill that you need to adapt your current physical and mental abilities to meet.
This gets more important the older and weaker you get.
You must constantly refresh your skills through short training intervals over time.
No dojo a-holes in the video.
You know who the dojo a-holes are? That’s the guy with something to prove who enjoys bullying the less experienced or weaker students. He hits a little harder than he should, he keeps you in the submission a little while after you tap.
He’s always looking to test you….
He’s the guy you avoid and eventually, he’s the reason you quit.
On video, the guy you want to teach is ALWAYS teaching!
Have you ever signed up for a martial arts class and the instructor NEVER teaches it?
It’s usually a senior student or someone who started only a few months before you!
That’s the instructor “bait and switch” and with the video…you always have the Instructor you want.
Plus your instructor is always in a good mood, he’s never late, hungover and doesn’t forget any important points.
You know, my mentor died over 10 years ago and I still can review his videos. Imagine if I didn’t have them. He’d be lost forever!
Finally, all Instructors and Programs are not Created Equal
You’re not going to find this at your local dojo and you’re not going to have a global network instructors at your fingertips.
I used to travel two hours to train with my instructor and when I couldn’t get to him, I was training with video, doing EXACTLY what you do in the SDTS.
If you find something worthwhile, whether it’s an instructor or a video, YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK and it will be of great use to you.
My mentor died over 10 years ago and I still review his videos. Because of that, he truly never dies.
