The key I think is not to lift the leg prior to stepping but to lift it as you “fall” forward. I weigh quite a bit as well and when I try to lift my leg first before stepping it slows the movement down. The way I got around it was to think of my forward foot as being a brake stopping me from moving forward with most of my weight on it. When I explode into the drop step I don’t lift the leg up or back before dropping forward but lift it up and forward simultaneously so I am springing or dropping into the target.

I hope that makes sense but I will look to see what my more experienced brothers in the system have to say. I may have interpreted it wrongly… :D
