Greetings Mr. Ross and happy new year!!!
I write you to ask about a subject you mentioned in your article “How to avoid justifiable failure”. You said that no matter what health problem we have we should train however we can.
Personally I suffer from chronic headaches and can’t find a solution to work out without busting my head.
I have tried things like the ones posted here ‘ https://www.fitnessmagazine.com/health/body/pain-relief/stop-exercise-related-headaches/?page=2 ‘ but I had no progression whatsoever.
I asked for clinical advice, but you know the BS every doctor says… ” Don’t train… “.
What I’m asking you is if you know some way, some type of training or any way to cure chronic headaches, so that I can train without regreting it, because right now whenever I try to work out, whatever the workout is ( weights, callisthenics, cardio, striking, etc ),
I suffer. I hope you have a solution to my problem.

      Antonio.

      Antonio,

Let’s break this into 2 parts. Self Defense and Fitness.

Self defense: all you need to do is go through the basic training of the Modules. Discover what your limitations are and then tactically focus on Modules 5, 9 and 11. These are your weapon training modules. To be honest, the same holds true with everyone who is serious about self defense. But being limited physically will increase your dependency on weapons.

How to I get a 300 pound man off of a 100 pound woman? Give he a push dagger, some training and the will to survive.

Your fitness issue is a little tricky. Obviously, I’m not a doctor but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night…

You’re issue maybe genetic, environmental, viral or nutritional.

You get headaches when you exert yourself. Is that through exercise only?
At what point in your life did you start getting them?
Have you been diagnosed by a Doctor with a specific condition?

I will say that you should start looking in the Sports Medicine field instead of the general practitioner realm.

I get headaches almost only through exercise. The tension of a push-ups set is enough to do the trick. I started getting them at August of 2013 ( I was nearly 18 by the way ). I normally trained 5 days per week in karate ( NOTE: just for a workout because it’s cheap, I didn’t like it ) and from then I started to hurt when I trained that much. I started to limit me at three times per week, until I stopped and started training home , lightly. Now I hurt with every workout. I haven’t been diagnosed with a specific condition by a doctor, I just asked for advice from a doctor, family friend of ours, and said that I should suffer from chronic tension-type headaches.

      Antonio,

First, let me second what Damian said. You don’t “need” to be in great shape to be safe. That’s the beauty of SDTS. Sure, being fit helps, but six-pack abs won’t help you shove a thumb into the attackers eyeball any harder. Just do what you can do. Any art that requires you to be a friggin’ sports model will eventually fail you in the street. Notice I said “require”. Getting is shape can do nothing but help your SDTS, but what makes the system so powerful is it does not rely on fitness to get the job done. A fat, old (okay, middle-aged), half-crippled person with bad knees like myself can do just as much damage with it; I’ve proven that! That’s part of Damian’s genius… it works for everyone, regardless of circumstances. The system conforms to you, not the other way around like most traditional martial arts.

Having said that, have you tried speaking to a chiropractor? I know a lot of people — particularly MD’s — don’t give them any due, but I suffered from migraines for years with no help from a doctor. I went to a chiropractor more as a “last resort” and within a couple of sessions I was good as new. Now I only get a migraine perhaps once or twice a year. They can certainly help, especially if yours stem from tension as you say. I swear by mine.

Just my .02 cents. Good luck.

That’s a really good idea, I’m looking forward at trying it!!! Basically I didn’t say that I need to work out for the SDTS to work or something like that, I just like working out and because I like to train on striking I want to get rid of the pain and feel free to push myself to my limits again… that’s all! Laugh

I’ll second the chiropractor, Antonio back in 2002 I was in a really bad car wreck and from that a fractured C6 vertibre in my neck along with nerve damage. I get those bad headaches just like you and the chiropractor was the only thing that helped me out. The pain meds just made things worse for me. In all honesty train as much as you can, just last week I had a other bad headache/migraine that showed it’s ugly face 15 mins into training. Just step back take a few deep breaths and go, just a 30 second burst and see how you feel. It may hurt like hell but also what would happen if your in the street with that headache and you get attacked? You still need to know how to protect yourself and push thru that pain if only a few times just to know the feeling. Take it easy the first few training sessions but as always train honestly.

I can sympathize with you guys too. A few weeks ago I was having issues myself with having headaches whenever I would exercise, especially strength training when doing strenuous lifts like squats or military presses. But would still have minor headaches at times when even doing striking drills on the dummy or light cardio like walking or hell even sex. Headaches would not only last during the activity but for several minutes to a few hours afterwards. It made me dread training too but I would just take a step back and take a breather or rest or even take a day off if pain got too severe but most importantly I didn’t give up or stop training totally. As Archie said you never know when you will be attacked and will be required to fight for your life regardless or physical condition or injuries or illnesses you may have so we must train to be equipped to deal with that. And sex, nothing short of death is gonna stop me from making love to a woman who wants to get down with me, I’ll fuck through that fucking headache until after orgasm and deal with it then lol. But that being said, it sounds to me like it could have been a cervical vertebra or pinched nerve issue that was radiating to my head because for the most part I’m better now and don’t have health insurance so I haven’t been to a doc yet, I will still have minor aches at times but my situation is much improved compared to before. Best of luck and happy training to you Antonio :)!

Thank you. I’ve thought of the possibility of being attacked and having a headache, but I don’t have a problem with that. That’s because:
      1) The headache comes AFTER workout, so if I push myself while not having a headache, for as long as a fight can hold, I won’t have any problems… the pain WILL come afterwards…
      2) If I already had a headache while I’d be attacked I know what would happen. Just last Friday I did powerlifting and suffered from a headache until the next day… At Friday night I went to church and when I was leaving I had a struggle with a kid from there ( he threw some kind of fake ink on my jacket and made me mad Wink ). Although I was suffering, I just grabbed him by the shoulders and run upon him while pushing, ’till he fell. When I’m at very difficult situations I have this Rambo-style mentality conquering my mind… ” NO PAIN”.
So I suppose that headaches won’t give me a very serious problem on fighting… the thing is that if I get a headache of this type, whenever in the day, it doesn’t go off at least until the next morning, so for me risking to have a headche is like losing the day. Confused
