What, in your opinion, is the biggest problems with organized martial arts that you feel the Self Defense Company Improves on? I say it’s the attitude towards contact with something to hit. Most of the experience I’ve had with karate and the like have little to none and I understand the supposed reasons, but always felt that you need contact with something or someone for the techniques to be effective. Here at least we are punching the heavy bag or the focus mitts or whatever which is a HUGE advantage over other forms of self defense.

I agree Pete, hitting things hard is a huge plus. There are so many reasons why the SDC performs more consistently than traditional martial arts. Here is my favorite (well really two, but they go together).

The biggest problem I recognize is simple gross motor movements and general application vs complex movements and scenario specific application. Having self defense be instinctive and convulsively natural allows it to still be effective even when you can’t hit hard because of a plethora of reasons.

In the KoBK podcast a few weeks back we talked about a few of the things that separates martial arts from self defense. I encourage you to check out the archived shows, as well as feel free to watch it live most Thursdays @ 6p EST.
