More than a few times I have written about serial killers and how it is possible for the average citizen with some self defense training to take on and win against these savage killing machines. One thing I have noticed in my research is people seldom ever remember anything about the victims in these cases or those who captured these killers. There are hundreds of pages all about these murderous people, but not about what is important.
Does anyone remember the name of the officer who arrested Charles Manson, Ted Bundy or any of the other killers. There is all kinds of information about these losers, scum bags, drug addicts, and criminals. They even get their own movies, books, and some even have fan clubs while their in prison. They should be studied so they can be stopped, but we also have to look at them from a self defense prospective.
If you look into any of the cases involving serial killers you can always find some facts that can help you and your students better prepare to deal with a situation.
First always assume the worst when someone approaches you; they’ve come to kill you. They might have rape, robbery, or simply might be drunk, but you have no idea of their intentions. The Zodiac Killer was often said to appear as friendly helpful person to his victims. When the Son of Sam patrolled the streets of NYC police later found he had helped several people while he had ambushed and murdered others. Ted Bundy sometimes asked for help from women than lead them to a place where he could torture and kill them.
So be wary and like your parents always told you, “don’t talk to strangers.” If your in trouble someone might honestly want to help, but don’t go with them. If they keep insisting on helping you than you know you’re in trouble and might have a fight on your hands. There are a lot of nice people in the world, but be wary of those who are the worst hiding among them.
Despite the nightmarish acts serial killers committ they’re still just criminals looking for an advantage so they can do what they want. You can’t do much when your chained up in an isolated shack miles from civilization, but you can stop them before they get you there.
There will be more history and advice to come, but remember the survivors are the ones who fight back.
