How to Gain the Tactical Edge in the Street

By Detective Ed Kane and Eric Delhauer, Upper Saddle River , NJ PD

I believe these two concepts comprise one single mindset that will give a police officer a distinct advantage in any situation where they might have to practice the use of force, deadly or otherwise.

The first half of this mindset is avoidance. In the context of defensive tactics, the word

How to gain the edge in the street? Close with the punk with a chinjab knee to the balls!

      Ask a question.

What’s your name? Can you spare some change? What’s your favorite color? Anything to get them to pause and then hit them as much and as fast as you can with whatever technique feels right at the time.

      Thanks Damian, nice article.
It applies well to civilians as well as leo’s.

There is always that fine line that cops must especially walk of avoidance or initiation. Too much and it can end up a mess with police brutality being brought up even when it shouldn’t and too little and the situation could end up alot worse with the officer potentially serious injured or killed.

It really comes down to how you engage the subject. With video installed on cop cars and everyone and their mother having a video phone you can’t be too careful.

Then you have to end it as fast as possible, knocking a subject out with a few shots looks a hell of a lot better than beating him a la Rodney King.

Finally, it’s how you write the report. The cop will always get the benefit of the doubt.

Police tactics depend on numbers and technology. Kevlar up and overwhelm the subject. In Guardian (https://www.legaluseofforce.com) we include both last resort type of tactics as well as the team tactics.
