Hey guys and girls I just wondered what you guys thought of an idea I just had. As you may or may not know, I have a a second-degree black belt in karate and I used to like to practice forms or as very much I found them fun to do and a wonderful form of cardiovascular exercise. Now the question is, what do you think about taking some of those katas and supplanting the moves found in the katas with the moves found here in the self-defense training program? Has anybody tried this?

That is very similar to the old “line training” of the military. Everyone would stand in a line and hit air. You definitely can do that, but keep in mind that hitting something and experiencing resistance/impact and “awkward” strikes is also incredibly important. However, if you want to kata/shadow box/“line train” feel free. It’s just another way to get reps and something I do when I’m feeling froggy and don’t have something immediately to hit.

Are you referring to the LINE training that the Marine Corps used to use?

Yes and no. The system they adopted became coined LINE because of the acronym they adopted (also the army adopted it after). They trained some shadow techniques because of its intent on lethality. Most marines and soldiers I know who did it thought the “shadow” part was hokey and one of the reasons bjj replaced it so quickly. However, I was more generally referring to literally standing in a line and performing air strikes which is also referred to as line training because you stood in a line. This is older, you can find old photos and video that shows it, like WWII/Korea.

I do. I like to superset 30 seconds of striking the focus mitts (I don’t own a heavy bag) with sets of calestenics.
