Well it isn’t exactly breaking news, but the USAF has taken on former Army Ranger Matt Larsen author of the Army’s FM 3-25.150 (Combatives) as a private contractor. The Air Force’s program has already started and the Army’s has been going on for years. The Marine/Navy training is different, but it also concentrates on nonlethal hand to hand combat.

If you have read Combatives or looked at any of the Army’s close combat training it looks more like sport combat than self defense. The reason for this is that Larsen an accomplished martial artist and combat vetern received his black belt from the Gracie family. Now while BJJ might be great in the cage it has no place on the battlefield. Sure it makes troops more aggressive and fosters a warrior culture, but so does teaching them something that is actually combat proven.

Funny thing is Larsen’s own site: https://www.moderncombatives.org/ talks about World War II combatives. They worked once why not use them again? What worked to kill Nazis will kill the fanatics we have today. Keep in mind the military only moved away from WWII combatives after Vietnam, and even no real reason was given.

Matt Larsen seems like a good guy and he has served in both the Marines and the Army as well as a private contractor. He has studied several martial arts, so I hope he is open to other ideas when it comes to training soldiers.
