I’m Interested in hearing people’s suggestions for keeping up on training while on the road. I work out of town a couple weeks a month so am either in a hotel or camping in my vehicle. I don’t have access to my heavy bag so can’t practice actual strikes. I have started using people on the TV or myself in the mirror to give me a target to throw some shadow boxing moves at but it is not the same as getting to really hit something.

All the video lessons here are great for keeping my head in the game but it’s my body that really needs the work.

Get a kick pad or some other strike pad for strike practice. If not, beat the feathers out of the hotel pillows. Get a little creative with how you prop it, but I would use an interior wall like the bathroom door jam so it’s not as loud if you care. You can possibly get one of the pull-up systems that slip around a door and hang the strike pad from one of the handles.

Just like “weapons” can be creative, your training can be too. The important part is something to hit hard.

Not sure I could get away with mounting anything on the walls without someone complaining or potentially calling the police. Most hotel walls are not very solid and I know I would be concerned that an innocent person was getting beat up if I heard and felt a lot of violent pounding in the room Next door. I get stuck working in CA a lot and the last thing I want is the police checking out my room. I carry a couple of self defense tools when in CA. They are all perfectly legal but CA has a reputation for arresting people for carrying legal self defense tools and forcing them to expensively prove in court that they were legal. Guilty until proven innocent when it comes to law abiding citizens wanting to be able to defend themselves:(

But if I was on the first floor I might be able to get away with putting the pad on the floor and work on stomps and other ground strikes. And might also be able to get away with hitting pillows or a pad on the bed.

That might work if I can figure some way to mount the pad firmly enough. At home I have started doing Tabatas to try and increase my cardio capacity (not easy when half your heart is covered in scar tissue) . 20 seconds of all out work 10 seconds of rest repeated 8 times. It works great doing 20 seconds on an exercise bike followed by 20 seconds of striking the bag as hard and fast as you can. My heart rate is through the roof after 4 minutes of that. Doing several of those sets in a row is very challenging.

So this is a great question actually. I swear by carrying pads and working solo drills with them. I can put together some solo pad training for you that was inspired by another incredible instructor out there.

Hi George. I would be interested in seeing some travel friendly training ideas. I have a set of Muay Thai strike pads and a larger kick pad. I’m just not sure how I could mount them in such a way that the people in the next hotel room wouldn’t think there was an earthquake shaking their walls;) The first big quake I experienced in CA I thought there was a 300lb person in the room above me doing some jumping jacks or something. Took me a few moments to realize the earth was shaking!

I’m going to do up some videos within the next couple weeks specifically on dolo pad training. No need to mount things. You can do this anywhere and it will keep your skills sharp while travelling.

Looking forward to the videos. Being able to effectively train on the road would be a game changer for me. Thanks!
