This is crazy, but is anyone shocked?
There is a lot to unpack here but I’ll start with…

How did the shooter get that position?
Any protection detail I’ve ever been involved with or even heard of will occupy (or monitor) all rooftops and windows within a reasonable radius that have line of sight to the protectee’s position.

There is no way he should have been there…or had a ladder against the structure.

It’s one of two things, incompetence or corruption. Either way, the agent in charge of the detail needs to be held accountable at the very least.

Second…there’s this (post below) if this is the competence of the “new secret service” people gonna die.

It seems every video I see of this incident just shows more layers of failure. This is going to be discussed for quite some time. I imagine more than one book analyzing the situation will be written and I do not see any favorable conclusions.

From your other post focusing on the three ladies, I agree that they looked like bad extras in a B-movie. Regardless of how well they performed (which doesn’t appear to be well), if there is one thing I know about high level operators (which Secret Service should be) it’s that from day one they train and operate at such a high degree that no matter what they do they look good doing it. The appearance of professionalism is just as important as execution, because if you look good doing it then you must be doing it well.

Whether it was by design, complacency, or a reduction in standards this was by most accounts a complete failure. I have other “insider” knowledge that points to this not being a one off incident based on other recent interactions with the Secret Service. As a whole their expertise has seemed to drop over the last couple years.

Great point – “The appearance of professionalism.” An example – pro football player runs the wrong route or picks up the wrong assignment on a play…he STILL LOOKS LIKE A PRO.

Simple things like weapon handling, body language and moving with purpose. The more I watch the video, the more shocked I am. Agents I have known and trained with basically “lived” with their firearm, it was a part of their body.

As far as this not being an isolated incident – oh yea, this was just a public exposure of the state of readiness for that agency. DEI when it comes to occupations that involve other’s lives is a recipe for…well, this.

100%. The hope is they take this and make improvements, but what we will likely get is defensive excuses or no response. For an agency with unlimited funding and almost no oversight the “people” need to hold them accountable because no one else does.

Right on cue @josh – retire Special Agent, Terry McCarthy drops a boatload of bullshit…

He sites “all of the threats they need to be prepared for (unmanned drones, IEDs) yet one kid on a roof with the rifle gets through?!

This was not a complicated layout. A handful of structures within a few hundred yards of the target. These guys couldn’t figure it out? Oh, yeah, the ladder agains the building was incredibly high tech.

      CYA – move forward.
