Sometimes I don’t get when to use module 5, module 1 when approached,I train by outdoors in a large open parking lot or field(module 5)Hallway,alley,or small room, module 1,2,4.maybe I am thinking too much in my training. John

OK, here’s the rub on Module 5 – if you train in Module 1 you might not feel that you want to go to Module 5. That’s natural so just scrap it.

Module 5 is great for people who ONLY want/need to escape. It’s perfect for kids and people who just want basic self defense training.

What happens once you start getting into STDS training from Module 1 you develop your forward drive and it overrides Module 5.

What is useful in Module 5 are the transition in direction.

So why isn’t Module 5 first?…It’s not as cool as module 1 Laugh

Also think of Mod 5 as what you would use if you’re lucky enough to live in a state that allowed concealed or even open carry of handguns. You would adopt the bladed stance gun side forward and use the finger dart and whip kick as reactive maneuver to access your firearm. It’s your bridge to be able to safely draw your gun without getting knocked out first by a charging attacker. But for the rest of us, Mod 5 is THE module to share with your girlfriend and other loved ones who are thinking about self defense but not really committed to anything past buying a pink canister of pepper spray because everything else is just information overload. At least Mod 5 will get them thinking, “Hey it’s best to actually not lodge this thing deep in my purse…” and to actually think about how they would use it instead of it becoming just another toy that they buy and never think about again.Smile

      [Young Wang],

Yes, it never ceases to amaze me how many women will purchase things like stun-guns and pepper spray thinking it’ll make them safer, only to bury it at the bottom of a purse or handbag. It never occurs to them that they may actually have to dig through pounds of crap before they get to it, all the while they’re being pummeled by the bad guy.

I’m working with my family on the Mod 5 material now… Damian’s other stuff is just a little too “hard core” for my wife’s tastes at the moment. Laugh Oh, well, baby steps, right?

      Stay safe.

Speaking of baby steps, THE one combo from mod 5 I taught to my girlfriend actually works on the progression of least “hard core”(bodyweight commitment) to most “hard core”(bodyweight commitment). After I explained that her priority is always to step back into a bladed stance when talking to strangers (instead of the reg interview stance), I taught her the finger dart HIGH to the face/eyes and whip kick LOW to the groin/shin with a stomp. I explained to her that if that gets them to back off/run away, great, now run. If not, edge of hand HIGH to the throat/neck area and edge of hand LOW to the groin all while keeping a bladed stance. Now usually all this will buy you the time to run or step back and draw pepper spray. But if HE STILL keeps coming, desperate times call for desperate measures, so square up and drive both your hands up for the double chin jab w/ thumb gouge and knees as necessary aka the coup de grace and Fairbairn’s FAVORITE for women. All attacks from the rear/side are the same except you may start with an elbow/ edge of hand. If she drills this high-low combo until it is instinctive and convulsive, she’ll probably never need any of the other stuff. The best defense against a insert grab/hold, wrist grab, front choke, etc. is a finger dart and whip kick aka don’t get grabbed in the first place Smile

Congrats on your relationship YW, and it’s great that you’re teaching her right should she ever encounter a fucked up individual intent on doing her harm or worse. Too many women, and guys also, strap on weapons and think they’re giving themselves an effective means of protection and big false sense of security without actually training how to deploy and use them in a real life attack, and most importantly retain their weapon to keep it from being taken and used against them. Module 5 is the perfect module for women, children, or those who otherwise just want to escape an attacker or buy themselves time to draw a weapon who otherwise are either overwhelmed or uncomfortable using the more brutal and lethal methods in the other modules. The point is people have no business carrying a gun, pepperspray, a knife, tazer, or any other weapons unless they have a basic foundation of hand to hand combat skills and how to correctly retain, deploy, and use the weapons they do carry.
