I don’t even bother with the stuff, I carry other more reliable weapons such as my firearm, blades, Damian’s favorite the blackjack lol, or of course the trusty inconspicuous roll of quarters. But nobody has any business carrying or using any weapon unless they have the proper hand to hand combat training to back it up.

It’s interesting… we carry OC on our duty belts, but since I spend a good majority of the time in a hospital setting, they don’t really like us using it due to the contamination factor. And we’re not authorized to carry Taser’s either, so really our bread n’ butter is defensive tactics. That’s one of the reason’s I’m such a huge advocate of SDTS and GDT; it just plain works when I need it.

As far as OC goes, in my experience it works “most” of the time, but I have seen a few people just shake it off. That’s one of the reasons I’m not a big fan; that, and the fact that it’s affected by environmental factors such as wind and rain. I’m just normally not too keen on placing my trust in something that may or may not work when I need it most. I’d rather hit ’em with a good old fashioned chin jab or hand yoke and be done with it.

A person is almost better off to be unarmed than to carry a weapon be it a gun, knife, pepper spray, tazer, etc. without having a solid hand to hand combat training foundation to be able to properly retain and use their weapon should things go south. Weapons in the wrong or untrained hands give people a false sense of confidence and security that they shouldn’t have and if anything can possibly give an already enraged attacker their own weapon to be used against them. Not to mention how much easier it is to defend your actions in court should you be confronted in a situation where the grounds are shaky about whether or not it was truly life threatening if you simply took them down with a good edge of hand, chin jab, or hand yoke or other empty hand tactic than if you pull out a knife and stab them in the neck or pull a gun and shot them. Things worked out and justice prevailed for George Zimmerman but it was still a close shave for him both on the street and later in court too. This is why the people need the SDTS and then and only then after they’ve had proper basic training start strapping on weapons that are legal to carry in their jurisdiction.
