What is one of the first things you teach in SDTS……there is no such thing as a sucker punch. The man was not aware of his surroundings and could have taken steps to avoid that. On that BJJ video, I have seen that defense taught in several BJJ schools. Here is my experience being the “bad guy” from that exact scenario. I lightly grab her hair (you grab even with moderate force and/or a decent jerk and the technique suddenly becomes way more of a struggle for them if not impossible), you extend yourself out and compliantly go down with her, you let her do the technique (armbar, triangle, whatever) and then tap when you feel a bit of discomfort. What is missing from all that; I am not using very much strength (and I am not even a big guy), not striking or aggressively hitting my opponent, and for the most part I am not really even trying to hurt her. And this is what is supposed to give them confidence in the street? Complete fallacy.
