  1. Many important things to unpack there. Women need to learn the movies are not real and most self defense instructors are talking BS. All those flashy armlocks, spinning throws, or cool looking jiu jitsu moves work against unmotivated partners (generally very close to your weight and height) on a nice cushy mats (no matter what brand of martial arts styles they train under). Something very different happens when the intensity is turned up. I’ve seen it more than a few times that as soon as the guy (in a training environment with pads and cushioned mats and all that safe environment stuff) who barely weighs 150 gets on top of a 110 pound woman and, while barely putting in 50%, keeps her pinned easily. Yeah, bucking, shrimping, and all that is what you have to do with no other options, but it in no way guarantees a determined attacker will stop. Moral of that story is moves are cool and a solid last resort but you need weapons and tools.

    1. Yeah— it’s a harsh reality that most people simply don’t want to face. And it’s SO TRUE. When they’re practicing self defense, that 150 pound male attacker will “pop” right off…but when they’re rolling…he’s easily dominating her. Yet there will be self defense seminars happening this weekend where people will be lead to believe they can magically pop out of being pinned down.

      I remember teaching that stuff in tae kwon do class in the 90’s and I knew, deep down that they had NO CHANCE of getting out…but I taught it anyway. It was like being a part of a cult.
