Instructor Mikel Sanders’ Journey from the streets of Baltimore to the Self Defense Company
“I learned how to handle myself on the streets of Baltimore City. Back when Baltimore was the “murder capital of the US”. Where growing up, we played tackle football on the pavement and rarely could you go too far from your neighborhood alone without being attacked.”
Mikel didn’t learn his self-defense skills in a dojo, he developed them in the real world where your life could be taken at any moment. You may think that’s not a big deal. Consider the fact that Mikel owned a pickup and delivery dry cleaning service for 3 years and in the evenings for over 5 years then he worked nights 6 and 7 days a week as a pizza delivery driver. Moving alone from neighborhood to neighborhood with cash on him at all times.
Mikel experienced most everything. Guns stuck in his face, knives pulled on him, gangs of guys trying to rob him, and surviving the occasional “Baltimore City Street Shootout”.
“If you weren’t aware and had your wits about you..it could cost you your life!”
“About a year ago, my best friend and partner in everything was attacked. Someone walked up behind her and held her up at knifepoint. Thank God, she was unharmed, but I was angry and embarrassed because I thought I had trained her well enough for that never to happen, ever!”
“That’s when I made the promise to myself and vowed that day that I would help everyone I could to not fall prey to this kind of thing, without having the skills to avoid it. So, I went on a search to find the most effective and comprehensive Self Defense training program available…and thats when I discovered The Self Defense Training System.”
Now, as a certified NLP Master Practitioner, certified master coach I help people make great changes in their lives. Because helping people is my passion. And I did find that comprehensive training program. It’s called the Self Defense Training System. So, I decided to team up with the Self Defense Company to help people learn how to better protect themselves while getting physically fit and ready for anything life throws at them.
Welcome to the Self Defense Company Mikel – like we say, people don’t find us because we’re different…they find us because THEY ARE! We’re glad to have you as a member of the team and look forward to great things.

Yes, Kenneth, it was great talking to you and I look forward to training with you.
Welcome aboard, have a blessed day
Thank you, Chip, much appreciated.
He said when Baltimore was the murder capital LoL it still is other places have higher homicides like Chicago but per 100,000 we’ve been the murder capital and still are for quite sometime.
You are correct about that Anthony.
Hello Mikel, Will your classes be shown on the computer or do students go to you.? Thanks.
For now Lawrence, we will be doing it over the computer. However, as soon as we come to a good place with the current situation, we look to give students plenty of opportunities to work in classes, small groups, and private trainings.
If you would like to know more, let me know and we can have talk about it. I look forward to helping you.
Congratulations my brother!!!
Thanks Erik, I appreciate that!
Hey Mikel,
Congrats and welcome to SDC. I am in Rockville… SDC Level 3 instructor. We’ll have to get together down the road, and train together sometime!
Wow, Scott, that would be really COOL! I look forward to it.
Welcome, Mikel! I am Bernie McPherson, way out in Hawaii. I am publishing a dissertation that compares Rape Aggression Defense, IMPACT, Model Mugging and STDS for use in a campus wide safety program. SDTS is the best researched program, and has the best deliverability available. The online format is superior to many other programs out there. I wish you the best as you deliver the safety message to our Baltimore citizens! You have a great vision!
Thank you so much, Bernard. I would love to see how your final analysis and dissertation comes out. I would be very interested in the statistics on the subject.
Welcome Mikel! I am Bernie McPherson. I am completing a doctoral dissertation supporting that SDTS is a superior training method. Because I do education research, my subject is campus security. The most popular courses are the Rape Aggression Defense, IMPACT, Model Mugging, and STDS. My research supports that SDTS is superior in at least two ways: First, it involved real use beginning in WWII, among combat troops. Not a sporting event, but actual combat. It has documented history. Second, SDTS is superior in deliverability. The three other courses I investigated tend to be live, four day, eight hour courses. To repeat the course, to lock in the knowledge and skills, you need to wait for another course in the city, or travel to another city. Who is going to do that? SDTS is set up, by video, to be readily available, ready to be reviewed by the students or instructor at any time. Repetition builds learning. I wish you the best with your learning through SDTS!
Thanks again Bernie, I really would love more information on what you are researching and your findings.
